Ocean Park Retreat Center & Camp BUSY, REWARDING, WONDERFUL SUMMER!
Our summer here at Ocean Park started with a new 3-week Jewish Camp in June and went non-stop through Labor Day. A total of 331 campers attended nine United Methodist camps, including our first Seahorse Horse Camp. Interspersed with these camps were Camp Hope for developmentally disabled adults, a bagpipe and drum school, a Baptist camp, and church retreat groups.
Everyone should experience summer camp. The fun, games, activities, worship, learning about God's dynamic presence in our lives, embracing community; all combine to create an energizing, fulfilling, wonderful summer for children, youth, and adults.
Summer 2007 will be here soon!
Here's the schedule:
Make plans now to come to camp at Ocean Park. THE AMAZING SPIRIT OF VOLUNTEERISM
Without our volunteers who so generously give of their time, talents, and resources,
Ocean Park would not be the special place we know and love. Following are some of the projects made possible by
our beloved volunteers. Shower House Remodel
A flood from a broken water line caused extensive damage to the South Shower Building in
July. Four VIMs (Volunteers In Mission) couples who came in motor homes did a marvelous job of repairing the interior
of the building. The team from Kansas consisted of Oakley and Pat Ralph, Maurice and Nancy Goff, and Bob and
M'Lou Stout. They were joined by Lane and Lynda Dreher from Bellevue, WA. It was a hard, hot, demanding task but
the men and women completed the work. In October, a group of volunteers from Vancouver First United Methodist Church
installed a new, metal roof on the building. The South Shower is as good as new (if not better).
Storage Building
Thanks to the people of Vancouver First United Methodist Church, Seabreeze Lodge now
boasts a new, large storage building. The building was donated by Mark and Julie Wiesner, excavation was done by hand
by a group of youth and a few adults, and the building was delivered and erected by a group of men led by Ray Johnson.
Later, both men and women painted it to match the lodge.
Ocean View Restoration
Tree removal on the west side of the dune to restore the view of the ocean from
Seabreeze Lodge is almost complete. Volunteers from Vancouver First United Methodist Church, led by Bill Hogan, were
joined in part of the project by a group from other churches to open a clear view of the cross and the surf.
Vegetation in this area will now be managed so the view is maintained.
Signs, Signs, Signs
We have received so many compliments on the appearance of the site this year. Our new,
routed, cedar signs are a big part of the improvement. Gene Fosburg made 32 signs to identify buildings, roads, and
trails. Mona Petersen and Gale Williams painstakingly painted each sign. Thanks to Gene, Mona, and Gale for a
time-consuming job well done.
New Exit Road
Thanks to the work of George Orr, our Facilities Manager, and contributions from donors,
the RV PARK now has a new exit road. This road allows drivers of motor homes to pull through the spaces when they
are ready to leave instead of backing up. A SPECIAL THANK YOU!
It is difficult to find words to thank two special people. They came in a motor home
from Kansas on Memorial Day and gave tirelessly and unselfishly of their time and talents until Labor Day. Terry and Janet Schneider truly model the spirit of volunteerism. Ocean Park benefited greatly from Terry's contributions to maintenance and site improvements and Janet single-handedly took over office responsibilities. The best part, though, is that Gale and Willis made two wonderful friends. We look forward to welcoming Terry and Janet back to Ocean Park. THE GIFT THAT WILL KEEP ON GIVING
About two months ago, we were surprised by a phone call announcing a significant
monetary gift to Ocean Park. Hazel Williams of Camas United Methodist Church and her family have donated $10,000 to
Ocean Park in memory of her late sister, Jean Sampson. The gift will be used to build a covering over our outdoor
basketball court. Jean was a physical education teacher and this gift on her behalf will allow the court to be
enjoyed year-round by countless youngsters and oldsters.
A big "thank you" to Hazel and her family.
ADOPT-A-BUILDING
Generous sponsors have adopted many of our buildings. Sponsors pay an annual adoption
fee that is used to maintain that building. Our thanks to the following sponsors:
If you want more information about adopting a building, please call or e-mail us. 65 YEARS OF MINISTRY
Ocean Park is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year. Our bus and trailer were
decked out for the 4th of July parade highlighting 65 years in this community. We also celebrate the thousands of
people whose lives have been changed through the Ocean Park experience as their awareness of, and knowledge about,
God's presence became deeper and deeper. We are excited about the next 65 years.
Check out our new website! It still needs some tweaking, but let us know what you think. www.opretreat.org Willis R. Williams Director |
